Growing and drying herbs
is one of my passions. I began in 2006 with a new herb garden and
will be adding to it each year. The herbs I grow are mostly for
culinary use and for use in my potpourris and bath products. I hope to add
in herbs for medicinal use in 2007.

This is the start of our herb
garden. It's a cat mint plant. All I
got to plant before the rain came!

Today brought more
work in the herb garden. This is a small patch of sage I added

10/05/06: I weeded the
herb garden for the final time this season & harvested some sage &
lemon balm. The rest of the herbs are too small this year to
harvest.
10/14/06: I harvested
more lemon balm and some chocolate mint. Both will make nice teas.
11/10/06: End of the
year update - Well this has been a good herb year. I put in the herb
garden and while not everything did well, I have a feeling for what will
and won't work for me. Our climate is just not right for lavender
sadly. I would have really liked to try that one. I have managed to
put up for use during the year: basil, chocolate mint, lemon balm, sage,
and chives. Next year I hope to put in a few more types of mints,
parsley (for the guinea pigs) and horehound. I'm thinking about
scented geranium and Lady's mantle as well.
Although not really
herbs, I want to put in some flowers to sell at our local farmer's markets
like strawflowers and sunflowers. I need to do more research on what
sells well & will grow well for me. I need to figure out what
people buy to put in arrangements. I may grow some marigolds from seed in
our hopefully soon to be constructed cold frame & try to sell those as
well.
3/11/07: I'm
trying to decide what herbs I want to add this year to my herb
garden. I want to do parsley and basil in the garden with the
veggies. I need to relocate the chives out of the raspberry patch
into somewhere where they can spread more. I want to add horehound,
anise hyssop and possibly valerian to the herb garden as well. I
think I'll also add feverfew. I'm trying to expand the medicinal
herb section. Waiting for spring is so hard!
- Ecclesiastes
3:1-2 There is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every
affair under the heavens. A time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to uproot the plant
04/28/07: The main garden is tilled
& raked and I hope to begin planting tomorrow. It will contain a
variety of veggies & beneficial herbs & flowers as we are trying
to do companion planting this year.
05/08/07: Our herb gardens have
been well mulched and it appears most are coming back. It's a little early
to be certain though. I was given some tansy, thyme, lemon thyme,
oregano and creeping geranium that I need to put in the ground
tomorrow. I still hope to get a few more types of herbs but it's
tough to find them around here.
07/12/07: Our catmint, sage
& oregano are doing really well this year. For some reason my sweet
cicely, chamomille & lemon balm didn't come back this year. No
idea why as they are supposed to be perennial and hardy to zone 4.
We put in some thyme that seems to be doing well and some lams ear as
well. I'll have to do some more research for herbs that will do well
in zone 4. I really want horehound but I cannot find plants and cannot
seem to get it to germinate from seed.
01/14/08: Time got away from me this
fall/winter and I didn't accomplish much at all. I managed to keep up with
the weeding although I didn't harvest much. I did manage to add in a
few new herbs at least but I think I added too much and just got burned
out. This spring I will focus on managing what I have and not add anything
new.
06/29/08: We have
had way too much rain this season and it's preventing me from getting into
the garden. I desperately need to weed but everything is mud. Our
sage, chives, oregano, thyme and Egyptian walking onions are doing
great. Our apple mint and peppermint are hanging in there. I
have added two stevia plants to our inside plants since they won't over
winter. I really want to start adding a few medicinal plants but I
am having problems finding them locally. I made a fantastic bread recipe
with thyme, chives and rosemary (from my parents). If anyone wants a
copy please email me: scentednights2002@yahoo.com
and I'll be glad to email it to you.
